Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy helps you reconnect with your body to heal emotional and physical impacts of trauma. By noticing bodily sensations and responses, you can release stored tension, regulate your nervous system, and build lasting resilience.

What is Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to healing trauma and stress. It focuses on the connection between the mind and body, helping you become aware of how trauma or overwhelming experiences are stored physically. Rather than relying solely on talking, somatic therapy uses gentle awareness of bodily sensations, movement, and breath to support healing. According to trauma specialist Babette Rothschild, trauma often leaves patterns in the body such as tension, hyperarousal, or emotional shutdown. Somatic therapy helps you safely notice these patterns and develop skills to respond to them with awareness rather than reacting automatically.

How Does Somatic Therapy Help?

Somatic therapy techniques, including grounding exercises, mindful movement, breath work, and body scanning, support nervous system regulation and emotional balance. By learning to read your body’s signals, you can reduce anxiety, release stored stress, and restore a sense of calm and control. This approach is particularly effective for people recovering from trauma, complex PTSD, or long-term stress, as it integrates the body into the healing process alongside traditional counselling. At Mend Melbourne, we guide each client at their own pace, helping build internal resources and long-term skills that foster presence, resilience, and emotional freedom.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live and work, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise their enduring connection to this land, its waters, and culture.

We honour the strength, wisdom, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and acknowledge the profound and lasting impacts of colonisation, including generational trauma and the devastation caused by policies of dispossession, forced removal, and systemic injustice.

In this space, we also acknowledge the deep scars left by childhood sexual abuse and other forms of trauma within First Nations communities, compounded by historical and intergenerational pain. We commit to listening, learning, and working alongside First Nations peoples to foster healing, respect, and meaningful reconciliation.

May this acknowledgement remind us of our shared responsibility to nurture a future of justice, equity, and hope.
